The Medical University of Vienna is a public university in Austria and the successor to the University of Vienna’s Faculty of Medicine, founded in 1365 by Duke Rudolf IV. As one of the oldest medical schools in the world—and the oldest in the German-speaking region—it combines a long academic tradition with contemporary scientific practice.
Today, it is Austria’s largest medical institution and a major research centre in Europe. It provides the full medical staff for the Vienna General Hospital (AKH), the continent’s largest hospital, and includes 31 clinical departments and institutes together with 12 theoretical departments.
The scale of the clinical and research environment results in extensive, well-structured biomedical and clinical datasets and a broad set of complex scientific questions. The university has a long tradition in machine learning and is home to a dedicated AI institute. It maintains strong collaborations with industry and supports the development of spin-offs, enabling the translation of research into practical applications. In this environment, long-standing medical expertise and modern analytical methods intersect in a stable and well-connected research landscape.
