About the PhD Call
The Medical University of Vienna is recruiting PhD candidates to develop AI and computational methods for medical imaging, biomedical data analysis, and clinical applications.
We offer fully salaried PhD positions with university employment, social and health insurance, 25 days of paid annual leave, and no tuition fees.
Available Research Projects
ML Algorithms for Arthritis Imaging – Machine learning for medical image analysis.
AI-Powered 3D Whole-Body Metabolic Imaging – Physics-informed deep learning for accelerated MRI reconstruction and quantitative imaging.
Model-Based RL for Mechanical Ventilation – Reinforcement learning for clinical applications.
Genetic Endotypes of ME/CFS – Computational analysis of genetic and biomedical data.
Research Environment
PhD candidates work in interdisciplinary research teams connecting computer science, AI, medical imaging, and clinical research.
MedUni Vienna collaborates closely with Vienna General Hospital (AKH) and provides access to advanced research infrastructure, including 7T MRI and new facilities for translational and personalized medicine.
The positions include individual supervision, structured doctoral training, international collaboration, and opportunities to publish and present research.
Candidate Profile
We welcome applicants with a Master’s degree (or nearing completion) in computer science, artificial intelligence, biomedical engineering, medical physics, mathematics, electrical engineering, or related fields.
Relevant qualifications include:
Programming experience, particularly Python
Knowledge of machine learning, deep learning, or numerical methods
Experience or interest in medical image analysis, image reconstruction, reinforcement learning, or biomedical data science
English proficiency at B2 level or higher
Specific technical requirements depend on the selected project. Previous experience in medical research is not required for every position.
Application and Selection
Candidates can apply to up to three PhD projects with one application.
Online interviews will take place in December 2026. Selected candidates will be invited to Vienna for a PhD campus visit to meet prospective supervisors and research teams.
