Wim Melis

Dr Wim JC Melis currently works as Associate Professor of Holistic Design at the University of Greenwich, UK. His research interests are in the area of optimising the efficiency of a system of systems by developing cross-disciplinary solutions that go back and question basic principles. On one hand, he applies this in the context of computing where he looks at the lessons that can be learned from biological systems to design new computer hardware for intelligent systems. On the other hand, he looks at a variety of different technologies in the area of sustainable energy generation and management, with a focus around the integration of energy storage and combination of various energy types. He obtained a PhD (2005) in Electronic Engineering – Computing Systems from Imperial College, London, where he had previously obtained an MSc in Analogue and Digital Integrated Circuit Design (2001). He received his first degree in Belgium as an Industrial Engineer in Electronics (MSc). From 2005-2010, he worked at the European Patent Office in The Hague as a Patent Examiner (2005-2010), and took a sabbatical at Tohoku university Japan as a COE Fellow working on a project related to biologically inspired computing from 2008-2009. Early 2011, he joined the University of Greenwich as a Senior Lecturer in Digital Electronics.
