PhD position in Dependable Operating Systems and Runtime Systems

Description

This is a qualification position within the meaning of the German Act on Fixed-Term Research Employment Contracts for Academic Staff (Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz “WissZeitVG”), which serves to promote a doctoral procedure or further academic qualification during the postdoctoral phase. The position is, depending on the qualification achieved to date, initially limited for a period of three years. An extension is possible within the time limits of the “WissZeitVG”.

The research group led by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kuan-Hsun Chen investigates dependable operating systems and runtime systems. Possible research directions include fault isolation and recovery, resource and concurrency management, compiler-aware system software, and cross-layer support for reliable and predictable execution on modern computing platforms. In a collaborative research environment, you will have the opportunity to address timely systems research problems and contribute to new concepts, methods, and software prototypes. The concrete research direction will be jointly defined based on your interests and background.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Research in the group’s topic area, in particular on dependable operating systems, runtime systems, and reliable and predictable execution on modern computing platforms
  • Publication, presentation, and transfer of research results
  • Teaching duties usually amounting to 4 teaching hours (SWS) per week

Recruitment requirements:

  • Scientific university degree (Master or equivalent) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline Ph.D (for the postdoctoral position)
  • Very good command of written and spoken English
  • Good German language skills are highly desirable, particularly for participation in teaching.
  • Knowledge in one or more areas relevant, such as operating systems, runtime systems, storage systems, compiler technologies, computer architecture, performance analysis, optimization, or parallel processing

Contract:

  • Duration: 3 years
  • Salary: according to E13 TV-L
