PhD Position on Edge-Cloud Orchestration and ML-based Resource Management in the Cloud-edge Continuum

The PhD candidate will be part of a highly international and enthusiastic team. This three-year position will be funded within the scope of MYRTUS project, financed by the European Commission. The 3-year PhD scholarship includes health insurance coverage and a gross salary of 25000 € in 12 monthly pays. Expenses for attending conferences, summer schools, and workshops will also be covered.

In the Centre of Industrial Electronics and Multimodal Systems (CEIMM) at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), we are looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD student in the field of Edge-Cloud Orchestration for Reconfigurable Systems. The proposed PhD research project is focused on the following topics:

  • Virtualisation of reconfigurable hardware accelerators (CGRAs, near-memory computing units, reconfigurable RISC-V extensions): isolated contexts, partial reconfiguration and time-multiplexing
  • Accelerator-as-a-service infrastructure for the cloud-edge continuum, with container and WebAssembly interfaces and live migration of kernels and state
  • Vertical and horizontal collaborative computation offloading across sensor nodes, gateways, edge servers and cloud
  • AI-driven scheduling and resource management: learned placement and partitioning of workloads under latency, energy, privacy and cost objectives
  • Machine-learning based performance and energy modelling of reconfigurable systems

The thesis extends CEIMM’s research on virtualisation of reconfigurable hardware and dynamic partial reconfiguration to a continuum where devices join, leave and fail, and will be validated on a real testbed from RISC-V sensor nodes to FPGA-based edge servers with AI and signal-processing workloads.

The PhD candidate will be part of a highly international and enthusiastic team. This three-year position will be funded within the scope of different national and European projects. The 3-year PhD contract includes health insurance coverage and a gross salary of 28000 € in 12 monthly pays. Expenses for attending conferences, summer schools and workshops will also be covered.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Electrical / Electronics / Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or similar. Previous research activities in the fields of interest will be highly appreciated.

PREFERRED SKILLS: Excellent knowledge of Programming in C and Python; embedded software programming for microcontrollers and FPGA design (VHDL/Verilog); Machine Learning fundamentals; experience with distributed algorithms is also valuable. A high level of English is required. Spanish is optional.

POSITION AVAILABLE: The selection procedure will remain open until the position is covered. The starting date is flexible but preferred ASAP.

INFORMATION: If you are interested in this position and want to have more details about it, please contact Dr. Andrés Otero ([email protected]), including the reference [PhD_Orchestration] in the subject of your email. For the formal application, the following documents will be required:

  • CV
  • Academic transcript of courses followed, and grades obtained provided by your institution.
  • Brief letter describing your motivation and previous experience.
