Sandro D'Elia

Working on digital technologies since 1983 (yes, I actually used punched cards). I started as a software developer for embedded systems, then worked on ERP, business and scientific software in many different areas from manufacturing to aerospace, e-government, automotive, industrial automation and cultural heritage. I still pretend to understand how software should be designed.

I spent a significant part of my career as IT project manager, first in the private sector and then in the IT service of the European Commission. In 2009 I moved to the position of programme officer. I worked on the European Union policies in the domains of the digital transformation of industry and artificial intelligence. I contributed to the design, drafting and implementation of the Horizon and Digital Europe workprogrammes for these subjects.

Retired in 2024, I still collaborate with the AI Office of the European Commission as an “active senior”, focusing on industrial applications of artificial intelligence. I do it for free and I am not looking for a consultancy job.

Main interests: Information and Communication Technologies, computing architectures, methodologies, open source, European research and innovation policy, digital technologies for sustainable industry, energy-efficient computing, autonomous cyber-physical systems, model-based design, project management, programme management. For the “science fiction” domain I am also interested in explainable and safety-critical artificial intelligence.

I work with a couple of NGOs to help them navigate the intricacies of EU-funded projects (yes, I also do this for free - don’t contact me for a lobbying job) and pursue my interests in storytelling, music and photography (check www.sandrodelia.eu for more information).
