PHD STUDENTSHIPS (UP TO 18)
IN THE SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCE
AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MANCHESTER

The School of Computer Science of the University of Manchester
(http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk) has up to 18 studentships to
offer to highly motivated research students who wish to start
a PhD in September 2009 (in exceptional circumstances the start
date can be deferred until April 2010). The studentships pay
tuition fees and a stipend to cover living expenses for 3 years.
In 2009/10, the stipend will be £13290 per year for students
who were UK residents in the 3 years before the start of the PhD,
or £12000 per year for students who were not UK residents in the
same period and cannot demonstrate a relevant connection to the UK.
The stipend is tax-free and expected to rise slightly in subsequent
years. Because of conditions associated with this funding,
these studentships are open to students eligible for home
fees only; this includes UK and EU nationals.

The School of Computer Science of the University of Manchester
is one of the leading Schools in the UK, renowned for the excellence
of its research. It has a vibrant research environment with more
than 150 PhD students, 90 research staff and 70 academic staff.
The international reputation of its research is reflected in the
results of the most recent national Research Assessment Exercise
(RAE). The University of Manchester's Computer Science Unit had
the second largest number of staff whose research was assessed
to be 4* (world-leading, the highest grade) among all Computer
Science Units of Assessment of all UK Universities.

If you are interested, you are encouraged to approach potential
supervisors and suggest a possible PhD topic. To submit an application,
please follow the instructions available from:
http://www.cs.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/research/apply/
Please indicate in your application your preferred supervisor.

Applications will be processed in two phases. In the first phase,
your qualifications will be considered and, if approved, you will
receive an offer for a place in our PhD programme. In the second
phase, you will be considered for funding. Processing of applications
for funding will commence on April 27th. Applications submitted after
this date will be considered only if there are still places remaining.
Applicants who have already submitted an application and are
eligible for these studentships will be considered automatically.
