Call for Participation
ASCI Springschool on Wireless Sensor Networks
30 March - 4 April 2008, Hotel Zonne, Noordwijk
The design of embedded systems is a major challenge for both academia and
industry. Complexity
of embedded applications as well as performance, cost, power consumption,
and time-to-market constraints
are ever growing. The Dutch graduate school ASCI organizes a springschool
that addresses
the issues related to embedded systems design. The central topic of the 2008
Springschool is Wireless
Sensor Networks, a rapidly evolving research area holding the promise of
taking embedded systems
to another level by employing them at large scale (i.e. thousands of small,
networked nodes collaborating
on a common application). The springschool will take a broad perspective and
cover issues like
resource limitations (energy!), in-network data processing,
reliability/dependability, MEMS technology,
localization, time synchronization, and low-power wireless communications,
to name a few.
The program of the springschool will consist of lectures by national and
international recognized
experts as well as a half-day, hands-on tutorial working with sensor node
technology developed at
ETH Zurich (BTnodes).
The first day of the springschool (Monday) will be reserved for the GNARP
workshop. This workshop acts as a low-threshold forum where PhD students can
rehearse their presentations
and receive feedback on their research by other PhD students and regular
ASCI staff.
Further announcements on GNARP workshop (the Graduat Network of Applied
Research in Parallel Systems and ASCI)
will soon follow!
ASCI PhD students and staff members
We aim at limiting the overlap with the winterschools of 2004 and 2006 as
much as possible. This
implies that ASCI PhD students who participated in those winterschools may
participate in the 2008
springschool as well, but in the case of too many registrations, debuting
PhD students will be given
precedence. ASCI staff members are always very welcome to participate in the
springschool and share
their expertise with the PhD students enrolled.
Note: In contrast to regular ASCI courses, the springschool is not free of
charge. The fee for ASCI
PhD students amounts to ¤200 and covers all accommodation and food expenses
for the entire week.
Non-ASCI participants
The springschool is also open to non-ASCI PhD students from Dutch
universities as well as to other
interested researchers (both national and international). The participation
fee for non-ASCI PhD
students is¤500. The fee for other non-ASCI attendees is¤1000. These fees
include accommodation
and food expenses for the entire week.
Registration for the Springschool
