Description

Barco Medical Imaging is developing high-end medical display systems. Our displays are used everywhere in the world and used eg. by radiologists to decide whether someone potentially has cancer or not. The quality of the display therefore is of crucial importance since it can make a difference between life and death for the patient.

To develop displays with the best possible clinical performance, we developed a software framework that can make a prediction of how well a display will perform in real clinical situation. This software eg. makes use of channelized hotelling observers (CHOs) to model perception and detectability of subtle features in medical images.

Unfortunately the software is highly computationally intensive. Performing a realistic and complete simulation of a new medical display can require between a few days up to a few weeks of computing time.

The goal of the internship is to accelerate this software framework. The internship will start with profiling performance of the existing code to understand where the largest performance gains can be made. We already know that different levels of parallelism can be achieved. Rewriting parts of the core computing algorithms can maximize instruction level parallelism. But it should also be possible to use multiple cores to run eg. several image filters on a single image in parallel, or even multiple CPUs (within one PC or on a cluster) to process multiple medical images in parallel.

This internship offers you the possibility to work in a challenging, research-oriented environment. Barco understands that scientific publications are important and therefore is very open towards publishing. The work that you will be doing will make it possible for Barco to explore more design alternatives for displays, and therefore will result into better medical displays and higher quality of healthcare for society.
