Description

The explosion of sources and uses of data (video, photos, audio, ...) in mobile devices (phones, portable media players, smartbooks, etc.) requires us to make data and signal processing more area and energy efficient. This project will look at changes in both the design and the implementation of NEON (ARM's SIMD extensions) to dramatically improve energy and area efficiency. The primary task will be refining microarchitectural sketches, modifying existing NEON performance models and benchmarking to determine the cost/benefit of different designs.

Desirable skills:
- Strong understanding of processor microarchitecture
- Experience writing processor simulators
- Experience of SIMD instruction sets
- Software engineering skills
- Hardware design skills are useful but not essential
- Good communication skills
