NSF (Rutgers) - HiPEAC Collaboration on Cooperative Embedded Computing

Embedded system miniaturization and power autonomy

We have a permanent collaboration with Rutgers University, under the NSF/IST collaboration programme. The objective of this collaboration is to explore novel application domains for cooperative embedded computing, such as smart phone-based pervasive services and vehicular computing, by combining the outdoor computing research from Rutgers with the expertise of the European team in high-performance, power-aware embedded systems.

During 2005 we have been working on the optimization of cooperative embedded computing for car-to-car short-range wireless communications. We had a cluster meeting at UPC during March 2005. The PhD. Student Carlos Villavieja visited Rutgers during November 2005. He is going to work on the project at Rutgers for three months in 2006.

We have attended the USA-EU Workshop, July 8th 2005 in Paris; and the Workshop on the Collaboration between FP6/IST and NSF/ITR Projects, Ljubljana, Slovenia, October 20th 2005, presenting the benefits and challenges of those collaborations.

As the 6th EU Programme had no funds allocated for this purpose, the IST recommendation was to assign some funds from the HiPEAC clusters CFP for the the HiPEAC European partners, in order to facilitate the organization of meetings, the attendance to the NSF/IST Workshops, and to cover the work done by the exchange students while they are working in Europe (NSF only covers the trips and stays of these students while they are in USA).
