Multicore Embedded System Architecture

The purpose of this cluster (TUD-PISA/SIENA) will be to setup innovative

proposals regarding multicore architectures that could exploit

existing and novel single core architecures.

Recent commercial proposals (e.g. Starcore) includes several processors

and DSPs with a common shared memory: anyway, communications issues

limit the performance and produce an inefficient use of the available

processors and resources. We wish to explore solutions that could

overcome these limitations.

As a first step, we will agree on single processor cores to be analyzed

and modeled and the methodology to be used.

Secondly, to carry out a serious performance evaluation, we will take into

consideration existing simulation tools and benchmarks already present in Delft

and in Pisa/Siena and consider proposals coming from the HiPEAC compiler and

simulation platform project.

Thirdly, we will analyze the most promising existing solutions to be adopted

for integrating several cores into a single chip, by considering possible

sources of overhead, implementation costs, simplicity of the programming model

to be adopted, performance and power constraints.

Fourthly, we will define most interesting solutions to be evaluated in detail

and eventually define new paradigms.

The outcome will be integrated in the 'Chip Multi-Processor' project within

the HiPEAC.
