Shuttle bus Rome-L'Aquila
Rome has two major railway stations that have a direct connection with the railway terminal in the Fiumicino Airport:
- Roma Termini, or the main railway station in downtown Rome. There is a frequent direct train connection (2 trains per hour) between Fiumicino Airport and Roma Termini (which is also the final destination of the train). The journey takes 31 min and it costs 9.50 euro.
- Roma Tiburtina, which is in the east of Rome. This station is located next to a big bus station which is the departure point of many regional bus lines, including the bus line to L'Aquila. There is a frequent local train connection (4 trains per hour) between Fiumicino Aiport and Roma Tiburtina. The final destination of this train is Orte, so in the airport you have to look for the train to Orte. The journey takes 41 min and it costs 5 euro.
The trip to Roma Tiburtina takes 10 min longer than the trip to Roma Termini because this train has frequent stops (both trains follow the same route to downtown Rome but the Tiburtina train stops in Ponte Galeria, Muratella, Magliana, Villa Bonelli, Roma Trastevere, Roma Ostiense, and Roma Tuscolana). If you end up in the wrong station, you can take subway line B to travel to the other station. The journey takes about 10 min (there are three intermediate stops at Castro Pretorio, Policlino and Bologna, see map). A ticket costs 1 euro and is sold by vending machines (often out of order) and in newspaper shops in the metro stations.
You can buy tickets for both trains in the train terminal in the airport, or in the railway stations.

A taxi from the airport to Tiburtina Station is expensive (about 60-70 euro) and it won't get there much faster. If you really need it, ask for the price in advance.
Tiburtina station is a fairly big railway station with standard facilities: small shops and places where you can have lunch. Outside the railway station, the neighbourhood is not very interesting. If you have to wait a long time, you better take metro line B to the stop Colloseo (20 min ride), which is in the middle of the ruins of the ancient Rome (Colloseum, Forum, Palatine hill), with lots of street animation on Sunday (see here and here). Walking around with luggage is not easy but if you have to sit down and wait, it is definitely more pleasant to wait with a view on the Colloseum.
The shuttle busses to the summer school will leave from the Tiburtina bus station. The busses will have ACACES 2007 signs on their windows. There will be busses at 2 pm and at 4 pm. We have some pictures of the Tiburtina Station and the bus station.
In case you miss the bus, there is a regular high speed public bus service (ARPA coach) from the same bus station to the central bus station in L'Aquila (it takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, and busses are leaving from platform 1, 2 or 3). So, if you miss the 4 pm bus, you can still take the 6 pm, 7 pm, 7.30 pm or 8.30 pm bus to L'Aquila. Unfortunately, we will not be able to refund your bus ticket in that case.

ARPA Coach tickets must be purchased before you board the bus, at the ARPA ticket office inside the bus terminal. The ticket price from Rome to L' Aquila (single journey) is presently €9.10, see arpaonline. The bus brings you to the L'Aquila Bus Terminal "terminalbus" which is located in the Underground City Parking of Collemaggio at level -1. From there you may get to downtown's main square Piazza Duomo by a combined system of underground escalators and moving walkways. To go to the summer school campus, you can either take the local bus at the same bus station (unfortunately, it does not run on Sunday - the weekly schedule for bus line 8 is given here, the stop in front of the entrance of the summer school campus is called "reiss romoli"; it takes 20-25 min), or a taxi (you may be able to share a taxi with other participants for the summer school that are on the same bus).
For participants who cannot arrive on Sunday morning in Rome or for participants who will arrive in Rome after a overnight flight, it is recommended to fly into Rome on Saturday, and spend Saturday night in Rome to get adapted to the new time zone. One possibility is to stay in Hotel Mediterraneo. It us just 2 minutes walking from Roma Termini (see map). Unfortunaly, we will not be able to refund your hotel. The teachers will also stay in this hotel and the 2 p.m. shuttle bus will make an extra stop in front of the hotel on Sunday at 1:30 pm sharp before leaving for Tiburtina station. Participants have the option to take the bus in front of the hotel too, but make sure you're on time because the bus cannot park for a long time in front of the hotel.
Driving to L'Aquila
From Fiumicino Airport take the Highway (toll free) to Rome Beltway (called GRA) in direction L'Aquila, after 30 km of GRA, take exit 24 to L'Aquila-Pescara A24 Toll Highway (Autostrada). The toll Highway A24 to L'Aquila is about 90 km. Take exit L'Aquila Ovest. After the pay-toll barrier, at the first stop take right and drive under the highway again. Follow the street until you find at your right a road leading to Coppito. This is the street Giovanni Falcone. The summer school campus is no 25 on your left. See also here.

You can park your car on the premises of the summer school after you explain the guard at the entrance that you are a participant of the ACACES Summer School. Please take into account that the building only opens at 3 pm on Sunday July 15.
